KUO Cheng-Chang’s works integrate elements of Taiwan, China, Japan, and western elements to reflect Taiwan’s diverse cultural personality. Balloon 2016 is an attempt to integrate creative ideas with folk culture to challenge the extremes of traditional character portraits. The work shows an innocent child hard at work blowing a balloon while butterflies flutter around him. Symbols of beauty from various cultures are surrounding the child. However, a balloon with too much air will burst, while the beautiful butterflies inevitably have to face their very short lifespan. KUO Cheng-Chang presents the unique situation of Taiwanese culture and as a reminder to appreciate the true nature of beauty.
