LIN Cheng specializes in Chinese ink paintings. Since 2012, however, her works started to become more unique and figural in nature. Since her youth, LIN Cheng has been a fan of Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama, a Japan cartoonist especially the character Goku for her courage, steadfastness, and optimism. In Holiukan 9, LIN Cheng took a key character in the Dragon Ball comic series and re-created her using Shanshui (mountain and water) forms. The layers, strokes, and blooms used in traditional Shanshui art were employed create, quite literally, a rock-solid body that complements perfectly with the character’s personality in the comic. The title of the artwork itself, Holiukan, is based upon a move used in the famous computer game Street Fighter.
By combining media and themes from different eras, LIN Cheng has created a personalized world of fantasy.
